Interesting important history of Ajanta Caves

  • Ajanta Cave, which attracts Indian as well as foreign tourists with its beautiful form, was built in AD. Even though it was created in the 2nd to 4th century BC, its beauty still attracts everyone. This is the cave that shows the legacy of Buddha Dhamma to the whole world.

Here you can see various expressions of Gautama Buddha.

  • Ajanta Caves rests on the banks of the Vaghur River
  • From the sculpture of the cave, it is said that this cave may have been built during the time of a king who believed in Buddha Dhamma.
  • However, some historians say that Ajanta Caves may have been built during the Satavahana dynasty.

Discovery of Ajanta Caves

  • On April 28, 1819, John Smith, a British officer of the Madras Native Infantry , while hunting in the Ajanta Caves area, saw Cave No. 10 and discovered Ajanta Caves. First of all, he saw cave number 10 where his name is still engraved.
  • There are 30 caves in Ajanta Caves out of which 30 are partially built so there are 29 caves in Ajanta.
  • Out of 29 caves, 5 caves are Chetya and 24 caves are viharas which are meant for Buddhist monks.
  • When seen from the sky, Ajanta Caves looks like a horse’s navel.
  • This cave is the oldest cave in India.
  • Due to this, UNESCO included it in the list of world heritage sites in 1983 and preserved the historical architecture.
  • On April 28, 2019, the discovery of Ajanta Caves completed 200 years.
